What’s new for SharePoint – July 2024
July 2024 has been an exciting month for SharePoint and related technologies! We’ve seen a host of updates that are sure to make your work life easier and more efficient.
First up, Viva Amplify has received several updates that will streamline the creation of internal campaigns, making it simpler than ever to engage your team. Additionally, Copilot is now available on SharePoint pages, helping users craft better text and enhance their content effortlessly.

Microsoft SharePoint: Authoring assistance from Copilot
Copilot is being integrated into Microsoft SharePoint’s Rich Text Editor, enabling content authoring assistance. It will be available for users with a Copilot Microsoft 365 license, rolling out from early July to early August 2024. This feature can be disabled in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
New page range setting for prebuilt and structured models in Microsoft Syntex
Microsoft Syntex will soon allow setting a page range for processing larger files with several pages in prebuilt, structured, and freeform models. This feature will roll out from mid-July to early August 2024, requiring no admin action prior to rollout. Users can adjust settings from the Model settings panel.
Microsoft OneDrive: How to ensure/manage background syncing on macOS
OneDrive for macOS is updating to streamline background syncing. The OpenAtLogin plist setting will be replaced by macOS System Setting Login Item, managed through a configuration profile. Rollout begins early July 2024, with completion by late July. Admins should review and deploy the Background Services configuration profile.

Import navigational links from Microsoft SharePoint into Resources in Viva Connections
Microsoft Viva Connections will soon allow users with editing permissions to import SharePoint navigational links directly into the Resources section. This feature will be available on desktop and includes a preview option before saving. Rollout starts early July 2024, with no admin action required for the update.

New enhancements to Restricted access control using Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra security groups
Restricted access control (RAC) is a premium security policy that lets admins restrict access to SharePoint and OneDrive resources to a specific set of users configured using Microsoft 365 or Entra Security groups. As part of this change, new capabilities will be added to review the impact of RAC application using insights reports and additional options to configure the policy will be made available. Also, policy enforcement visibility will be extended to Site owners via SharePoint sites.

Microsoft Clipchamp is launching for Office 365 E3 and E5 commercial subscriptions
Clipchamp, a video editing tool, is launching for Office 365 E3 and E5 subscriptions. It will be accessible via its Windows app or on desktops through Edge or Chrome browsers. Users can edit videos in OneDrive or SharePoint, and it will appear activated in the Microsoft 365 Admin Console. General availability begins late August 2024. No other parts of Office 365 licenses will be affected.

Viva Amplify – Advanced analytics
These updates to Amplify Reports and Analytics provide a series of improvements to the existing experience, such as large audience scenarios to better reflect reach across the enterprise. Viva Amplify reports will now be integrated with Campaign Brief and will also include historical data. This data will be available as graphs on the reports and to download as a CSV. There will also be features for copying charts as images and downloading to PowerPoint. The historical data experience provides unique views, promotions, and reactions for the last 7, 30, 90 days, and the last 12 months.

Microsoft Viva Amplify is updating its authoring experience for Outlook and Teams distribution channels, aiming for a consistent and improved editor interface. Microsoft Stream: Seek bar thumbnails for Teams meeting recordings
This feature adds seek bar (preview) thumbnails to Microsoft Stream’s video player. The thumbnails provide a preview of the video content when hovering over the player’s seek bar at a certain timestamp. Currently, it will only be made available for Teams meeting recordings.

Viva Amplify: Viva for AI Transformation pre-built campaign now available

Microsoft OneDrive: Update for unlicensed accounts
OneDrive is updating storage policies for business and enterprise unlicensed accounts, effective late January to March 2025. Unlicensed accounts over 90 days will be archived and inaccessible to users but visible to admins. Actions include archiving, deletion, or renewal. Education tenants are currently exempt.

Microsoft Clipchamp will soon allow users to make image backgrounds transparent in videos without losing quality. This feature will be available to all users, with rollouts starting late July 2024 and completing by mid-August 2024. No admin action is required for the update.

Viva Amplify – Copy a publication within a campaign
Gone are the days where you must rewrite or manually copy and paste content from an old publication to a newly drafted one to reuse it. Soon in Viva Amplify, you will be able to copy a publication within an existing campaign with just a few clicks. This new feature streamlines the content creation process, enabling communicators to easily reuse existing content across SharePoint, Outlook, and Teams, including all channel-specific customizations and related audiences, saving you time and effort.

Copilot for Microsoft 365: Direct connection to Microsoft SharePoint organization asset libraries
Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 now supports direct searches and downloads from SharePoint organization asset libraries for brand-approved content. Rollout starts mid-August 2024, with completion by early September 2024. Tenant admins must prepare by identifying brand content and using a new cmdlet for library consent.
