What’s new for SharePoint – October 2023
SharePoint has undergone a remarkable transformation, what was once a standalone application has evolved into a powerful platform for a growing array of Microsoft 365 applications. In this monthly update, you’ll find the latest changes, starting with the refreshed landing experience for Viva Connections, which now boasts branding capabilities, announcement features, and enhanced layout options.
Additionally, you’ll learn more about the retirement of Microsoft Stream Classic and the promising announcements for its successor. The updates for Viva Connections, such as the ability to create more experience and consistent brand theming, are also on the agenda, along with the introduction of a search feature for Viva Connections on Android and iOS. These changes reflect the ongoing evolution of SharePoint and its expanding role in the modern workspace.

Refreshed landing experience for Viva Connections desktop
The refreshed landing experience for Viva Connections introduces several requested new features including branding capabilities, sending announcements, a revamped Resources section, and support for different card sizes. The refreshed landing experience also brings the feed back into the viewport on your Connections page and offers an improved layout to the landing page.

Syntex OCR for image-only multi-page PDF and TIFF
With this update, multi-page image-only PDF and TIFF files in the libraries you have configured for Syntex OCR will also have text extracted. This extracted text will be available to Microsoft Purview scenarios and to end user search powered scenarios. For multi-page PDF and TIFF documents, OCR is charged on a per page basis.
Add individual file shortcuts in OneDrive for Web
This feature will let you create a shortcut to files stored in other people’s OneDrive and document libraries to be able to easily find it within your OneDrive. These file shortcuts can be moved, renamed, or deleted without impacting the source content, and they will show up in OneDrive for Web, Android, iOS, and sync client endpoints.
Stream (Classic) to be disabled on Oct 15, 2023 unless you take action
Starting on October 15, 2023 your users will no longer be able to access Stream (Classic) unless you take action to delay this change. This change can be delayed until April 15, 2024. The process to delay this change can be found here: How to delay the change that will block users from accessing Stream (Classic).

Create Up To 50 Distinct Experiences in Viva Connections
Customers with Viva Suite or Viva Employee Communications & Communities licenses can currently create up to 10 Connections experiences. We will soon be enhancing that limit to 50 experiences. This will allow greater flexibility for large enterprise customers who are looking to create more than 10 (and up to 50) Connections experiences.

Apply brand colors across all Connections endpoints using SharePoint themes or custom themes.
Viva Connections will offer a new set of theming options to reflect brand colors consistently across desktop, tablet, and mobile experiences. With this new functionality, customers will have the choice to apply existing SharePoint themes or a custom theme to their Connections experience as well as the SharePoint home site hosting the Connections experience.

Adding a search entry point and a new tailored experience for Viva connections users on mobile in Android.
Add a survey, poll, or quiz to a video at specific times
Make your video interactive and more engaging by adding a survey, quiz, or poll using Microsoft Forms. You can add forms anywhere in the video timeline for videos you own. Go to Microsoft Forms to view responses and share a summary link with answers and scores in Microsoft Forms.

Syntex OCR is generally available
With this update, the Syntex OCR feature will move from public preview to generally available. You will now be able to use the GA version of Syntex OCR.

Search in Viva Connections Mobile for iOS
Search will now be enabled in the Viva Connections (VC) app in Teams. Along with searching in Teams, VC users will also be able to get intranet search results. This feature will be rolled out in a phased manner starting with iOS in mobile only, followed by Android in mobile and then Tablet. The current update is linked to iOS in mobile and we will send out a notification before other phases as well.
Microsoft Stream: Add a survey, poll, or quiz to a video at specific times
Make your video interactive and more engaging by adding annotations that can include hyperlinks and text. Call out important moments or share documents and other links to additional resources. You can add text and links anywhere in the video timeline to help guide your viewers to the right information.

Search in Viva Connections Mobile for iOS
Microsoft new Video tab will improve video search in your organization by having a dedicated place to search through OneDrive, SharePoint videos. This Video tab will appear on Microsoft Search in Bing/Office and SharePoint. Updates to the experience in Stream will come at a later time.

People Search Card in Viva Connections
Viva Connections have a new card where admins now have the option to incorporate a new people search card for their organization. This card enables colleagues to effortlessly search for and communicate with one another within the organization using Teams chat and email.

Access Microsoft Lists, Power BI, Loop and Whiteboard content in OneDrive for Web
You will be able to easily find and open your Microsoft Lists, Loops, Power BI dashboards and Whiteboard content in OneDrive for Web. If you have recently opened, shared, or favorited one of these files, then it will appear in your Recent, Shared, and Favorites views in OneDrive for Web.

Accessibility improvements to tables within the text webpart allow users to specify row and column layouts, as well as provide alternative text labels for screen readers.

Microsoft Syntex: Advanced Tenant Rename
As part of SharePoint Advanced Management, change your SharePoint domain with greater control. This includes the ability to prioritize up to 4,000 sites for early execution as well as support for tenants with total site counts up to 100,000.

This feature includes stock videos and images, music, shapes, graphics and annotations and is available via web only for the following Microsoft 365 SKUs: Microsoft 365 E3, Microsoft 365 E5, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, and Microsoft 365 Business Premium.

Connections Boosted News Notifications
Soon, in addition to existing news notifications, user of Viva Connections will also receive notifications for boosted news on the organization’s news site. This will allow communicators to more directly reach end user with important company news and communications.
