SharePoint Flexible Layouts Have Arrived – What You Need To Know
The feature that I’ve been waiting for since I started customizing SharePoint 13 years ago has finally arrived! SharePoint pages are now more versatile than ever with the introduction of flexible sections. This new feature gives us greater control over the layout of our SharePoint pages, allowing us to place elements exactly where we want them.
What Are Flexible Sections?
Flexible sections are a new type of section that allows us to build without a strict column structure. When adding a section to a page, you’ll see a new option called “flexible.” Within a flexible section, we can drag and drop web parts anywhere on the grid. Web parts will snap to the closest grid line when moved, and we can resize the web parts themselves.
How to Use Flexible Sections
Using flexible sections is simple. When you add a new section to your SharePoint page, select the “flexible” option. From there, you can drag and drop web parts onto the grid, resize them, and arrange them to your liking. You can also multi-select web parts, group them, and drag and drop new section templates from the content pane toolbox.

Available Web Parts and Their Limitations
Here is a list of the web parts available for use in flexible sections, along with their limitations:
- Card-Based Web Parts: These include quick links, people, and hero web parts. They have four different width options: full width, one-third of the canvas width, half the canvas width, and two-thirds of the canvas width. These web parts can only be resized to one of these four options.
- Non-Card-Based Web Parts: These include text, image, file, and media web parts. They can be resized to any width on the grid.
The flexibility of flexible sections allows us to make arrangements in an overlapping way, with web parts overlapping other web parts. This gives us the freedom to create dynamic and visually appealing layouts.
Conclusion
Flexible sections are available for use in SharePoint and Viva Amplify, which are based on the SharePoint Pages platform. This new capability flows into Viva as well, enhancing our ability to create engaging and customized pages.
I hope you enjoy using flexible sections to create beautiful and functional SharePoint pages. Happy building!
