How to Create a Custom Vertical Navigation for SharePoint Pages

In the classic SharePoint world, sites used to have both vertical and horizontal navigation. I did quite a few customizations for both, including creating a collapsible menu for vertical navigation.

In today’s post, I want to show you how you can bring some of those old vibes to the modern SharePoint communication sites and how you can use the Site Pages library to create a collapsible menu for your pages that can be used as a template.

Let’s implement this solution using just standard SharePoint components; you’ll be surprised.

Building a SharePoint intranet with ChatGPT and Bing – Navigation

SharePoint intranets are a great way to keep your team connected and informed. However, having a good menu in your SharePoint intranet is crucial to ensure that users can navigate through the site more easily.

Menu items should link to the most needed and used resources around your intranet, even if they’re very deep within your architecture.

How to setup the SharePoint global navigation

Having a global navigation shared between sites was one of the major challenges in SharePoint over the last years. It was not an impossible thing to do as I explain in this article, but was not an easy and intuitive process to do.

With the new SharePoint app bar available for modern sites the global navigation problem is gone and we all can take advantage of a streamlined navigation with a beautiful interface that can be configured in just a few clicks.

Find your way inside Teams with breadcrumb navigation for SharePoint sites

SharePoint and Teams will soon have a lot in common with the SharePoint framework being used as a base foundation to extend both platforms. SharePoint Breadcrumb V3 – navigate between folders

Breadcrumb is one of the most requested features by SharePoint users but unfortunately Microsoft removed it with SharePoint 2013 and to this day it was never reintroduced.

Last year I did a solution to bring back the breadcrumb to SharePoint without modifying the master page and today I’m releasing its third version with new features implemented based on the feedback provided by the users.

The new version is configurable according to your needs, includes support for folders inside libraries and supports custom master pages.

Create a modern breadcrumb navigation on SharePoint

Breadcrumb navigation was available by default on SharePoint 2007 and 2010 but with the introduction of SharePoint 2013 it was removed and until today it wasn’t reintroduced.

Today I’m revisiting one my most read articles, back in 2013 I wrote an article to explain how this functionality can be added again to SharePoint and judging by the number of views this article still has there’s a lot of people trying to get the breadcrumb back.

The method from the previous article is still valid but it requires you to manually modify the master page, if you are not going to customize the layout of your site there’s no need to mess with it.

Metadata navigation is not visible to users with read permissions

This is a common issue when you start using the metadata navigation in your SharePoint 2013 site, let’s check how easily you can make it available to all the users.

By default, when you create a term in the navigation term set, SharePoint selects Term-Driven Page with Friendly URL, if you leave this option selected the term will be visible only to the users with write permissions.
